The bike bug bit you and now you’re shopping around for a new commuter bike. One that makes it easier to exercise while you ride to work, one that helps carry your groceries with ease, or both. Over time biking has become multi-dimensional and potential riders are looking to bike more for three main reasons: health, family bonding, and convenience.

Exercise

Cycling is an easy and fun way to get your heart pumping. Regardless of where you’re going, you can burn some calories during your ride. Even in hilly areas like San Francisco, the CERO One can make biking to work a lot easier with its powerful motor and ten gears to do the heavy lifting for you.

Cycling at any age has become easier and easier. With pedal assist e-bikes like the CERO One, people of all ages can start cycling. It’s a safe and reliable way to exercise while receiving some help from the motor, should you need it. E-assist doesn’t mean you’re missing out on a workout. Actually, studies have shown that people riding e-bikes bike more often and go further distances than people on conventional bicycles. We’re honored to help people of all ages and abilities continue to find joy in everyday biking.

Family Time

Enjoy a ride with the entire family! Whether it’s a romantic bike ride by the beach with your significant other or a fun cruise with your kids in the back seat, riding is fun for the entire family. You can ride to the park for a picnic, visit the beach, or go on grocery runs as a family. With different types of bike accessories on the market like CERO’s large front basket, you’ll have plenty of room to carry your items. The CERO One’s modular cargo racks allow you to easily switch between various racks, baskets, bags, trailers, and child seats. Biking together can be a great way to bond with your kids, de-stress from a long day, and turn an everyday activity into an exciting adventure.

Think back to when you learned how to ride a bike. Maybe you were four or five years old or maybe you learned later in life. In any case, those memories stay with you forever. Take your little ones to the park and let them ride free or grab some of your favorite picnic foods to make a day out of it. Biking with your kids is great way to inspire a love of the outdoors, promote healthy exercise, and train the next generation of car-free commuters.

Convenience

With developers and city officials increasingly working to make space in cities for people on bikes, it’s become easier than ever to bike around town. More and more protected bike lanes and dedicated bike paths are being installed to promote biking as a form of everyday transportation.

Start with an easy ride to your local grocery store. With the CERO One, you won’t have to deal with parking hassles, rush hour traffic, or gas and you’ll be able to take your groceries home with ease. The more you use your bike for everyday transportation, the more money you save and the less time you need to spend at the gym!

Whether you’re looking to add more exercise to your daily routine, bond with your family, or make your life easier, biking can help you reach each of those goals. So what are you waiting for? Grab a bike and hit the road.

Dress (Your Bike) to Impress

One thing we have learned about Cargo Bikes and Cargo Bike Culture is that they are all about individualism. By their very nature, with their beefy frames and racks designed to carry people’s stuff, they are bikes that beg to be customized with custom-made, DIY contraptions. Riders of our CERO One surprise us every day with their ingenious ways, creating mind-blowing bike setups that fits their individual transportation needs. Here are some of the most creative uses we have seen so far…

Cero

The City Dweller

Our LA-Based Customer Kyong, has the most miles on his CERO One that we know of (so far). He owns a car, but would much rather conquer LA on 2-wheels, and once a week takes his bike via train to San Diego to teach a university course. Now, that’s commitment! To expand the “trunk” of the CERO One, Kyong bolted down a tool box on the bike’s rear rack, which he keeps safely locked, and carries everything from his work gear, a change of clothes, and an array of bike tools.

Bob Vaughan Bike

East Bay Living

Bob is one of our more recent customers. After buying his bike from Spokes Bikes in Berkeley, he quickly impressed us with his setup. Based in Northern California, Bob is an avid rider, and felt right at home with the CERO One, except now he has a Big Cargo Basket to work with in addition to the rear rack. Some cool touches of his own include the handy rearview mirror, his own preferred saddle, the basket-mounted bottle cage, and that awesome white toolbox and side cargo bags in the rear!

Yoga Setup

Namasten-Speed

Cruising through sunny LA on her way to teach a Yoga Class, rider @theisabelleroyer wowed us with her ingenious use of the bike. We’ll let her tell the story: ✨✨✨✨✨ My ride to teach Yoga on the Octagon this morning…. speaker, mic, mat, it all fits on my @cerobikes and is so much easier to park! ? ?‍♀️ Thanks @velofixlosangeles for hooking me up.? ✨

Customer Dough Whitman Coloradolowreslow res

Rocky Mountain Ride

A few days after receiving the bike, Doug in Colorado impressed us with this picture of one his outings. Already maximizing the usage of his front basket (for Chinese takeout, in this case!), he went out to his local bike co-op to drop off some gear, using our trusty platform mounted in the rear rack, all while riding in -20 degree temperature! We couldn’t help but notice the handy addition of an extra bag on the top tube – great idea!

Our Favorite CERO Cargo Setups

Doggo + Bike = Happiness

@houndofthewood is a therapy dog based in Berkeley, California, who brings many-a-smiles to people when riding around town. We love his big, comfy bucket, where he often invites other doggos to sit in and ride along. Just look at how happy he looks with his CERO Bike! Plus, we have no doubt that he is a very good boy.

Mitch

Bike on Bike

Mitch is in love with bikes. He is not sure how many he owns at this point, but his collection spans the range from classic bikes, to road bikes, mountain bikes, and self-made frankenbikes. So in the absence of a car, he uses his two CERO bikes to transport not only other bikes, to carry everything from groceries to, get this, a lawnmower.

GoBox PDX

Cargo with a Mission

When we heard @GoBoxPDX bought a CERO One from our dealer in Portland (Splendid Cycles), we had to look into them. Were blown away, not only by their mission to “Go #zerowaste with reusable containers” for food takeout and Portland’s famous food cart, but their intended goal of transporting these by CERO Bike!

7 Reasons Why the CERO One is the Right Bike for You

7 Reasons Why the CERO One is the Right Bike for You

CERO Bikes | 08/09/2021

1) DESIGN

Unlike many other e-bikes that use white-label frame designs from Chinese factories, we made the CERO One from the ground up, working with renowned industrial design and Engineering teams in the U.S., who sought inspiration from classic bike designs like the European Cycle Truck and the Japanese Mamachari. That is why the CERO One looks unlike any other cargo bike, yet performs like the best of them!

2) SHIMANO TOTAL INTEGRATION

When it comes to electric bikes, the most important things are the motor and battery quality (you don’t want a no-name system that no bike shop will touch and that might catch fire!).

Here is some of what you get with Shimano Steps on the CERO One:

– Shimano’s highest capacity battery (504Wh) for up to 105 miles of range!
– One of the lightest and most compact motors in the market.
– Smooth shifting with Gates Carbon Drive belt and internal hub gears.
– Strong yet intelligent pedal assist for a solid, natural feel.
– Incredibly easy to operate.
– Very durable to handle all weather conditions. It’s the Shimano quality you expect

3) CARGO

We can’t talk about a cargo bike without mentioning carrying stuff! The CERO One comes equipped with with front and rear cargo. First, choose any of our 3 cargo baskets for the front. The rear rack is super versatile: add one of our baskets, mount some pannier bags, add a child seat, or just tack on a good old milk crate! We love to see what our customers come up with!

4) FULLY EQUIPPED

Here is where our bike stands out from the competition! In addition to the quality motor & components, great design, and awesome cargo, the CERO One is packed with good stuff:

– Powerful Front and Rear Lights (Front: Spanninga Axendo 80, 2 LEDs, 80 Lux. Rear: Spanninga Solo, 1 LED).
– ABUS Frame Lock
– Strong Double Leg Kickstand
– Ergonomic grips and Saddle from Ergon
– Schwalbe Big Ben Plus tires specially made for e-bikes, with puncture resistance.
– Custom Fenders to keep the rain and mud away.
– Adjustable stem for reach and comfort.

5) SUPERIOR QUALITY

We are proud of the design, manufacturing, and component quality of the CERO One, but of course, you don’t have to take our word for it. Check out this review of CERO Bikes by Richard, in San Diego. Or what some of our other customers around the country have to say about the bike. Finally, check out our collection of Press Reviews to learn even more about the bike!

6) CUSTOMER COMMITMENT

Our biggest joy at CERO is connecting with our customers, whether in person, phone, email, or social media! We are always there to help with any questions about the bike, warranty issues (2-Year Warranty included!), recommendations, or just to chat about bikes, you can count on us.

7) THE RIGHT PRICE FOR THE RIGHT BIKE

Cheaper e-bikes might have attractive prices but the risks outweigh the savings, and they are likely to be collecting dust in a few years. Other quality electric bikes similar to the CERO One cost at least $1,000 more at your local bike shop. An investment in a good e-bike, like the CERO One, will pay off in the long run: you’ll have years and miles of riding on your bike, not to mention big smiles throughout.

We’ve been told by many of our customers that they ultimately bought the CERO One because it provided “the right mix of quality components and features for a great price“. Others have called it “one of the best values you can find in an ebike/compact cargo bike.” We agree!

Making a Bike: The Story of the CERO One – CERO

It was one summer morning in 2014, as Kiyoshi Iwai dropped his kids off to school, that he first saw a cargo bike. It was a dutch-style “long john” bike. In the car-centric culture of Los Angeles, the idea that someone would use this strange vehicle to take their kids to school took Kiyoshi’s by surprise. It reminded him of his days living in Tokyo, where the Mamachari bike was widely used. He wondered, “Why aren’t more of these bikes being utilized here in LA?”

So began the journey to create the CERO One; a modular cargo system on a step-through frame that could accommodate riders of different heights and cargo loads.

Early concepts borrowed inspiration from the Mamachari and other utility bikes, such as the British Royal Mail Bike.

Kiyoshi partnered with Vapor Studio out of Encinitas, California to develop the design and feel of the bike. Together, they conceptualized the kind of uses such a bike could have in the United States. They visualized the bike being used for various reasons including; commercial transportation, last-mile transportation and everyday commutes.

After many rounds of drafts, they landed on the sleek, modern design you see today on the CERO One. It incorporates the utility of the Mamachari and British mail bikes and bringing it to the 21st century.

The CERO One in Midnight Black. the cumulation of years of design.

The CERO One was purpose-built to include key features that make up the most high-quality electric cargo bike available. Starting from the top down, the CERO one incorporates a Satori adjustable stem with up to 100mm of up-down range and a 90 degree tilt. Plus, we added a twist feature that allows the user to reduce the width of the bike for easier storage. No more awkwardly angling your bike to fit it in the garage.

Kiyoshi and the team included two cargo racks; one up front and one over the rear wheel. Owners can equip baskets, panniers, or even a Yepp Maxi Child Seat. All without the need for an adapter.

Speaking of carrying cargo, the CERO One wouldn’t work without its step-through design. Swinging your leg over any bike can be a hassle and adding cargo on the back makes it near impossible. That’s why we implemented a step-through design so you can do just that: step through. This design makes getting on and off the bike a breeze.

Nestled between the top-tube and down-tube of the CERO One, you will find the quiet and compact mid-drive motor that supports your pedaling up to a cool 20mph. Kiyoshi and the team included a reliable 10-speed Shimano Deore drivetrain that works seamlessly with the pedaling power of the motor unit. With this support, you can whiz past other cyclists without even breaking a sweat! Simply flip the bike into “high” when approaching a hill and the motor will take the hard work out of pedaling through the most intense concrete urban commutes.

Watch to see how this reviewer was able to make a trip to the hardware store on his CERO One.

No bike would be complete without tires. The CERO One features puncture-resistant, e-bike certified tires by Schwalbe for smooth riding with the heaviest of loads.

When it finally came to naming the colors of the bike, Kiyoshi was reminded of that day when he dropped his kids off at school. He chose Halu Blue, named after his son and Shio Grey, named after his daughter. More colors would later come, but it was the initial family sentiment that gave Kiyoshi the inspiration to create such a unique and practical bike.

All these features make the CERO One the best e-bike on the market. It is bred from passion and designed for utility. Check out the options below!

The Advantages of Smaller Front Wheels in Compact Electric Cargo Bicycles

The Advantages of Smaller Front Wheels in Compact Electric Cargo Bicycles

CERO Bikes | 02/19/2024

In the evolving landscape of urban mobility, compact electric cargo bicycles have emerged as a versatile and eco-friendly solution for city commuters.

A notable design feature in some of the latest models is the adoption of a smaller front wheel compared to the rear.

This configuration is not only a stylistic choice; it’s a carefully considered design decision that offers several practical advantages, enhancing the bicycle’s functionality, stability, and maneuverability.

In this article, we dive into the technical aspects of why a smaller front wheel is advantageous for compact electric cargo bicycles.

Improved Load Distribution

One of the primary benefits of having a smaller diameter front wheel on a cargo bicycle is the optimized load distribution it facilitates.

By lowering the cargo’s center of gravity, especially when the cargo is placed in front of the rider, stability is significantly enhanced.

This arrangement reduces the likelihood of tipping, making the bicycle safer and more reliable when navigating urban environments loaded with goods. It will allow you to go faster while remaining stable.

Enhanced Garage Parking Efficiency

Moreover, the compact size of bicycles with smaller wheels translates into more efficient parking solutions within garages, where space is often at a premium.

These bicycles occupy less floor space and overall volume, an essential consideration in garages cluttered with other belongings or vehicles.

This efficient use of space not only simplifies the task of parking your bicycle but also contributes to a more organized and accessible garage environment, making it easier to store and retrieve your bike alongside other stored items.

Enhanced Maneuverability

Maneuverability is crucial in tight urban spaces. A smaller front wheel allows for a tighter turning radius, enabling riders to navigate narrow streets, corners, and obstacles with greater ease.

This agility makes compact electric cargo bicycles with smaller front wheels particularly suited for city use, where flexibility and the ability to maneuver through traffic are essential for efficiency and safety. It’s also a key feature when you need to park your bike fully loaded.

Whether it’s in your garage or in the street, the small front wheel will make your life easier.

Increased Strength and Durability

Smaller wheels inherently possess a higher structural strength due to their reduced diameter and shorter spokes, which translates to a decreased chance of deformation under heavy loads.

This is particularly important for cargo bicycles that are designed to carry heavy or bulky items.

The increased durability and strength of a smaller front wheel ensure that the bicycle can withstand the rigors of daily use without compromising performance or safety.

Better Braking Performance

The braking system’s effectiveness is crucial for the safety of cargo bicycles, especially when transporting heavy loads.

A smaller front wheel can improve braking performance due to the reduced rotational inertia, allowing for more responsive and controlled braking.

This is particularly beneficial in emergency stopping scenarios or when navigating steep descents, providing riders with confidence in their ability to manage the bicycle under various conditions.

Aerodynamic Efficiency

While aerodynamics might not be the primary concern in urban cargo transportation, the reduced front surface area of a smaller wheel can offer slight improvements in aerodynamic efficiency, particularly at higher speeds or when riding against the wind.

This can contribute to reduced energy consumption and extended range for electric cargo bicycles.

Design and Aesthetic Appeal

Beyond the technical benefits, the choice of a smaller front wheel can also contribute to a compact and distinctive aesthetic that differentiates a bicycle from conventional designs.

This unique appearance can appeal to users looking for a bike that stands out while delivering practical advantages.

Conclusion

The adoption of a smaller diameter front wheel in compact electric cargo bicycles is a testament to the thoughtful integration of design and engineering to meet the specific needs of urban transportation.

This feature enhances load stability, maneuverability, strength, braking performance, and even aerodynamics, making these bicycles a compelling choice for anyone looking to transport goods efficiently and safely in city environments.

As urban mobility continues to evolve, such innovations will play a critical role in shaping the future of transportation, making it more sustainable, practical, and adaptable to the challenges of modern city life.

Most Commonly Asked Questions about the CERO One – CERO

maximios
0 0 1
Share

How far can I go?

Range is the most important consideration for any potential e-bike rider. Nobody wants to get stuck at work or the grocery store with a loaded bike and no battery. Thankfully, the CERO One pairs Shimano’s latest, 504 Wh battery with their super efficient pedal-assist 250 watt motor, which gives you ranges of up to 93 miles on a single charge (depending on which mode of assist you are using, and other factors like terrain, cargo weight, etc.). What’s more, if you did happen to run out of battery, you can still pedal and use your gears to pedal back home! (the bike will feel a bit heavy but it won’t be as heavy as with a rear hub motor!)

Read more about the amazing Shimano Steps system.

GREY Battery

Why the small front wheel?

The CERO One pays tribute to many classic cargo bike designs that also feature a small front wheel, such as the 1930s butcher bike (seen in the picture on the left), the British Royal Mail Bike, and the Japanese Mamachari. The reason for that 20″ wheel up front is so that the front cargo’s center of gravity is lower to the ground, leading to increase stability. In addition, you have more room above the front cargo rack to put your stuff.

How fast does it go?

The Shimano Steps motor will provide up maximum pedal-assist speeds of to 20 MPH, which classifies the CERO One as a “Class 1” category e-bike. Of course, if you have Tour de France caliber legs or you are going downhill, the bike can easily go faster than 20 MPH.

Cero One Electric Cargo Bike
Shimano steps ebike charger cero electric cargo bike

How long does the battery take to recharge? How long will it last?

Easy: 2.5 hours will get you 80%. And 5 hours will charge it up to 100%. You can plug in the charger directly onto the battery while mounted on the bike, or you can remove the battery and charge it inside your house or office. You can expect the battery to last up to 1000 charging cycles before you start to see it degrade. And yes, it’s possible to buy a replacement years down the line.

How much weight can I carry?

Each rack – whether front of back – is rated to carry up to 55 lbs. Our recommendation is, if you load one rack to that 55 lbs, don’t put more than 22 lbs on the other. This will ensure the bike is balanced and still easy to handle. Of course, we always recommend our customers to practice with different weight distributions – every person is different, and while one person might feel comfortable putting 100 lbs of cargo on the bike, another person might only feel comfortable carrying 50 lbs. Total maximum recommended weight on the bike (cargo and rider) is 300 lbs. Have further questions, please contact us!

Side Cargo Pizza Bike
Short Cero Bike

I am rather tall/short – will the bike fit me?

We designed the CERO One with features that make it a one-size-fits most bike, and we are fairly comfortable that the bike can fit riders from 5’2″ to 6’4″. Those features include a 100 mm, adjustable stem, with an additional angle reach. Plus a 350 mm seat tube for the saddle height adjustment. The low step through on the frame means you won’t have a need to be swinging your bike over a tall top tube!

What can I do to protect my CERO One?

To start off, you will always want to use a sturdy lock, wether a thick chain lock or u-lock, to a secure and unmovable object. Then, you want to take advantage of the ABUS Frame Lock that comes with the CERO One, which prevents your CERO from being the thief’s getaway vehicle in case they cut the lock. Finally, always bring the Shimano computer display with you, which you can very easily slide out.

Abus Frame Lock Cero One Electric Cargo Bike

How much does the bike weight?

With the battery and front cargo, the bike rounds up to around 56 lbs. Sounds heavy compared to a regular bike, we know, but e-bikes average between 40 to 70 lbs, so it’s right around average.

The Brilliance of CERO E-Bike: Featuring Spanninga AXENDO 80 Lights

CERO Bikes | 02/26/2024

In the world of electric bikes, the quest for perfection is unending. At CERO, we pride ourselves on crafting e-bikes that are not just vehicles, but beacons of quality and safety.

Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our choice of components, partnering with industry leaders such as Shimano and Ergon to ensure our bikes are equipped with nothing but the best.

When it comes to safety, lights are your go-to solutions. The good news is that the CERO bike has them already integrated.

Today, we shine a light on one of our most distinguished components – the Spanninga front and rear lights, a testament to our dedication to safety, quality, and technology.

The Pinnacle of Headlamp Innovation: Spanninga’s AXENDO 80

At the forefront of our lighting ensemble is the Spanninga AXENDO 80 headlamp, a marvel of Dutch engineering. Renowned for its unparalleled brightness and efficiency, the AXENDO 80 exemplifies the fusion of cutting-edge technology and elegant design. With an impressive 80 Lux output, thanks to its Reverse Beam Technology©, this headlamp offers a bright, expansive, yet non-blinding beam, ensuring optimal visibility on any urban adventure.

Key Features:

  • Reverse Beam Technology©: A unique system that that uses only 25% of the energy of a regular bulb for the same intensity and with hardly any heat loss. The light rays of the LED are projected backwards onto a mirror directing it into a powerful conical beam with a perfect light spread. The light is then divided over a large surface which makes it less aggressive to the eyes. The result is a more efficient system and a reduced power consumption.
  • High-Quality Construction: The headlamp’s aluminum housing, coupled with an elegant silicone band, provides durability and a distinctive aesthetic.
  • Philips® Optical System: Ensures a powerful and precise beam, conforming to rigorous German, Danish, and Dutch standards for safety and performance.

The Compact Brilliance of the SOLO Rear Light

Complementing the AXENDO 80 is the SOLO rear light, a testament to Spanninga’s expertise in compact, high-performance lighting solutions. Its ultra-flat design and advanced Light Line Technology© make it a standout feature for any e-bike, offering exceptional brightness and visibility in a sleek, integrated package.

Key Features:

  • Ultra-Flat Design: At just 98x36x15mm for the dynamo version, the SOLO’s compact form factor is both aesthetically pleasing and practical.
  • Light Line Technology©: This advanced technology ensures that a single LED can illuminate the rear with incredible efficiency, making you visible from up to 500 meters (1640 feet) away.
  • Flexible Mounting System: Accommodates both 50mm and 80mm carrier bolt distances, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of e-bikes.
  • Safe-Stop Function: For the dynamo version, this feature keeps the light on for four additional minutes after stopping, enhancing safety during pauses in your ride.

Designed for Durability and Style

The robust aluminum front fork bracket and optional front reflector enhance safety and visibility, marrying functionality with aesthetic. The headlamp’s high-quality aluminum housing is complemented by a redesigned silicone band, giving the AXENDO 80 a distinctive and stylish appearance.

A Legacy of Excellence: Spanninga’s 100-Year Journey

Spanninga’s journey began in 1918, rooted in a commitment to cyclist safety and innovation. As a family-run business, Spanninga has evolved into a global leader in micromobility lighting, with a rich history of pioneering safety and lighting solutions. Their dedication to quality, innovation, and sustainability has solidified their reputation as a trusted name in the industry.

Spanninga Values: Lighting the Way Forward

Driven by core values of innovation, trust, integrity, and energy, Spanninga stands at the forefront of micromobility lighting. Their commitment to making the world safer and more appealing, both day and night, is evident in every product they create.

Why CERO Chooses Spanninga

At CERO, our mission is to provide our customers with e-bikes that embody safety, reliability, and style. The inclusion of the Spanninga AXENDO 80 lights in our bikes is a clear reflection of this mission. By partnering with Spanninga, we not only equip our e-bikes with top-tier lighting solutions but also align ourselves with a brand that shares our values and dedication to excellence.

The CERO One lets you customize the stem and saddle height to fit riders of most heights comfortably. So if you want to let your family members or work colleagues borrow it, that’s an option too!

Attention to Detail

We carefully designed every feature to complement the bike’s performance, cargo, and safety needs. Add to that a smooth, maneuverable, speedy ride, and this might be the last bike you’ll ever need!

20″ front wheel provides awesome maneuverability, and also great stability by keeping the cargo center of gravity low.
The rear rack is ready for your cargo: use it as is, mount some panniers, equip any of our versatile baskets, or mount a Yepp Maxi Child Seat (no need for adapter!)
Find your comfort zone thanks to the Satori adjustable stem with up to 100mm of up-down range and a 90 degree tilt. Plus, a twist feature lets you reduce the width of the bike for easy storage.
The quiet and compact mid-drive motor supports your pedaling up to a cool 20 MPH.
Classic step-through design makes hopping on-and-off the bike a breeze – particularly useful in the case of a loaded bike!
A reliable 10-Speed Shimano Deore drivetrain works seamlessly with the pedaling power of the motor unit.
Puncture resistant, e-bike certified tires by Schwalbe for smooth rolling with heavy loads.

West Coast Train & Bike Adventure: Yosemite to San Diego

CERO Bikes | 04/24/2024

Train travel offers an enchanting blend of comfort, convenience, and scenic beauty, making it a great choice for exploring the vibrant cities and breathtaking landscapes of the West Coast, including Yosemite.

Whether you’re journeying from San Francisco to Los Angeles or onward to San Diego, incorporating your bike into your travel plans can transform a simple trip into an adventurous exploration.

Note a small quirk: you might need to book your bike space via phone due to a website issue. If you experience any issue with the Amtrak website, just call, it’s often a better experience: 1-800-872-7245

Why Choose Train Travel?

Scenic Routes: Trains like the Coast Starlight offer unparalleled views of the Pacific coastline, lush forests, and rolling hills, making the journey as delightful as the destination.

Eco-Friendly: Opting for train travel is a sustainable choice that significantly reduces your carbon footprint compared to flying or driving.

Stress-Free: Forget about traffic jams and the hassles of airport security. Train travel provides a relaxed environment where you can stretch out, wander to the café car, or just gaze out the window. The seats are super wide which makes it ever smoother than a car ride.

Bike-Friendly: With facilities to accommodate bikes, trains offer a unique opportunity to explore each destination on two wheels right from the moment you arrive.

Your Train Options from San Francisco to Los Angeles:

  1. The Coast Starlight: 20$ bike reservation
Seattle – Portland – Sacramento – Los Angeles

Known for its stunning vistas, the Coast Starlight is the longest route. But the comfort and views are worth it. You can enhance your experience with a private room that includes meals served in the dining car.

  2. The San Joaquins: Bikes spots are free without reservations on this route.
San Francisco Bay Area (or Sacramento) Stockton – Modesto – Merced – Martinez – Fresno – Bakersfield. And other stops along the way.

For speed, the San Joaquins is unmatched, connecting San Francisco to LA with minimal hassle. Frequent departures give you flexibility in planning your travel. Just buy a ticket and go!

To go from SF to LA, it involves a bus from San Francisco to Emeryville, then the San Joaquins train from Emeryville to Bakersfield, then another bus from Bakersfield to Los Angeles. Your Bike will be stored in the luggage compartiment.

  3. The Pacific Surfliner: Free bike reservation
San Luis Obispo – Santa Barbara – Los Angeles – San Diego.

This route requires a bike reservation but promises a comfortable journey with beautiful ocean views.

Each Pacific Surfliner train has room for seven bicycles. Book early with a bike reservation to avoid spaces being sold out, especially if traveling on a weekend or holiday.

Continuing South: Los Angeles to San Diego

The Pacific Surfliner again takes center stage for the journey from Los Angeles to San Diego. It remains bike-friendly with required reservations, and scenic ocean views continue to accompany you southward. Current service interruptions due to landslides may require a bus transfer, but this is usually well-managed, ensuring your adventure stays on track.

Tips for Bike Security

  • Lock Your Bike: On the San Joaquins and Pacific Surfliner, it’s wise to secure your bike. While theft is rare, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
  • Baggage Car Security: On the Coast Starlight, bikes are stored securely in the baggage car, so there’s no need for a lock.

Journeying from San Francisco to Yosemite with Your Bike via Amtrak

Traveling from San Francisco to Yosemite National Park with your bike via Amtrak involves a combination of train and bus services. Start your adventure by catching an Amtrak bus in San Francisco that takes you to the Emeryville (or from Okland) station. From there, board the Amtrak San Joaquins train heading to Merced.

This train is bike-friendly and does not require a bike reservation, allowing you to bring your bike along at no extra charge.

Once in Merced, transfer to the YARTS (Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System) bus that provides direct service to Yosemite. YARTS buses are equipped with bike racks, making it easy to continue your journey with your bike. If not, they’ll be sorted in the luggage compartiment and you will have to take the front wheel out.

This service drops you off inside Yosemite National Park, at Curry Village.

You can pedal through the park’s stunning natural landscapes.

Be sure to check the schedules and availability in advance, especially during peak travel periods, to ensure a smooth connection throughout your journey.

Making Your Trip Seamless

Despite the detailed logistics, traveling with your bike by train is straightforward once you’re familiar with the system.

Plan ahead by checking train schedules and booking your bike space early, especially during peak travel seasons.

Train travel with a bike opens up a world of possibilities. Imagine cycling through the bustling streets of Los Angeles or along the sunny beaches of San Diego, all without the constraints of a car.

It’s not just a journey; it’s an experience that invites adventure at every stop.

For any questions or tips on how to make the most of your train and bike travel, feel free to reach out or comment below.

Again, our experience was better by calling the hotline 1-800-872-7245 than using the website which has many issues.

Happy travels!
